This Japanese-style game looks at first glance like a new and improved version of Pokemon. Cassette Beasts is a retro game with bright, colorful pixel graphics that tells the story of unusual creatures, some cute and some not so cute, all living together on the fairy-tale island of New Wirral. By chance, you end up there too, and to survive you have to explore the island and build up your defenses. You do that with cassettes and players. The more of them you collect, the faster you can transform into a monster with superpowers. And it does not stop there: monsters can also merge with one another into super-mega monsters, or form a pact to fight virtual enemies together. There is a huge number of combinations. When you fuse one with another, you have no idea what abilities the new beast will have. In total, the creators designed 14,400 possible outcomes.
You will also need your superpowers to break down obstacles and solve puzzles. You can also team up with a permanent partner in the game. It can be played both solo and with other people.
It is a role-playing game in which you have to record all 120 existing monsters on tape before you can reach the finish.
The game was developed by Bytten Studio, and it was made by people who previously worked on games such as Starbound and Stardew Valley. It officially launched on Nintendo Switch and PC.
Today you can try it out and buy it with a one-time payment, through online stores or the official platform.
