The first Far Cry got a warm reception, so the second game faced a very tough job: impressing players even more. The developer, Ubisoft this time around, pulled it off! It built an open world that stretches across a full 50 square kilometers. Covering that much ground on foot is hard work, and you don't have to, because the game gives you a ZIL-130 truck, several off-road vehicles, boats and a hang glider. That alone is enough to make you want to play Far Cry 2, and there is plenty more to like.
You travel to an unnamed African country that has been left without a government, with one goal: to take out the Jackal, a mysterious, cunning and calculating arms dealer. He is a big reason the region is torn apart by civil war. Two sides stand out, the UFLL and the APR. The leaders of both care little about the people and a great deal about wealth and power. In short, the hero of Far Cry 2, who can be any one of nine available characters, lands in a spot worse than being caught between a rock and a hard place. But he is a seasoned fighter who fears nothing and no one. Then again, the Jackal doesn't know fear either.
What makes Far Cry 2 stand out:
Huge scale. You get 50 square kilometers of African territory to explore, with savanna, jungle and desert.
Stunning looks. This is the first game built on the Dunia engine, which delivers destructible environments, a day and night cycle, changing weather and other natural shifts, plus a lot of other great stuff.
Variety. The rich arsenal deserves a special mention, with 4 models of assault rifle alone, along with a whole fleet of vehicles. You can even tear across Africa in a ZIL!
A true sandbox. Nonlinearity is one of the game's biggest selling points. You can side with one faction or even several, stay neutral or turn against everyone...
Smart AI. Non-player characters react first and foremost to what you do, but they are also affected by the weather and the time of day, both of which change dynamically.
Uncompromising realism. To make everything feel real, your character has to repair vehicles, use GPS and other electronics properly, fight off disease, deal with animals... And that is far from everything Far Cry 2 has to offer.
