Don't be surprised if Halloween 2015 turns out very, very quiet. Not because everyone will be too scared to go outside, but because nobody will dare tear themselves away from their screens... On October 31, Five Nights at Freddy's 4 arrives on PC, the sequel to the famous horror game about "lovable" Freddy the bear and his pals. The announcement came with the words "The Final Chapter." It's obvious enough that the phrase points to an ending. Still, it's hard to believe a hit like this won't get more sequels down the line. The series is at the very peak of its popularity, and the movie proves it... That's another surprise! The film is being made by none other than the Hollywood studio Warner Bros. Among its creators is Seth Grahame-Smith, who wrote the novel Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.
The Five Nights at Freddy's hit came out of the efforts of a giant studio... Just kidding! It's the work of a single developer, Scott Cawthon. The first game was released in August 2014 for PC and for Android and iOS devices. It's about a night security guard at a pizzeria. Sounds like a sweet gig: enjoy the solitude and the pleasant smells... Except that at night the animatronic dolls come to life. By day they're simple toys that draw in customers. After dark they turn into tormentors... Something is off with their programming, and they see a human as an unfinished machine, so they use force to "fix" him... This is where the jokes stop. Nightmare after nightmare, for five nights straight! Very, very long nights...
Scott Cawthon is clearly preparing plenty of surprises in Five Nights at Freddy's 4. The development time alone hints at it. The previous games came out one after another every 3 to 4 months, while the new one took more than six months to make. Does that mean it will be twice as scary? Does anyone doubt it?! The first image released for the game also hints at all-pervading terror. It shows a badly battered animatronic holding a top hat in its hands. Everything suggests the doll is plotting something truly nasty. Bad luck for the next security guard, or for someone else... Or maybe they'll get lucky after all, since it all depends on what the player does.
Back to that "The Final Chapter" tagline. We really don't want the fourth game to be the last. We think there will be a fifth and a sixth, because the game deserves it. Some reviewers recalled that the very same phrase accompanied the fourth Friday the 13th movie, and that didn't stop eight more films from following. There's no doubt the Five Nights at Freddy's series has an equally long history ahead of it. Scott Cawthon, a very talented man, clearly has plenty of aces up his sleeve in the form of new sinister animatronics. So everyone, let's wait for October 31.
