The Dark Souls universe became hugely popular in its day thanks to its setting and its unusually high difficulty. Now that the series has run its course, players are free to turn their attention to other games in the same vein. Cradle Games, however, has no intention of letting such a popular formula go so easily. The studio made its own Dark Souls, only set in space and called Hellpoint. This time you test yourself in orbit around a black hole, trapped on a huge space station that is slowly filling up with terrifying creatures and simple zombie warriors who have arrived from parallel universes.
The story revolves around a strange cataclysm that began merging identical people from different universes into a single whole. Those beings have turned into mindless zombies, aggressive creations and merciless machines. The hero of the adventure is an ordinary resident of the station who did not fall victim to the cataclysm and now intends to find out how this dangerous situation can be fixed before everyone dies.
The developers made it clear from the start that the gameplay would be quite hard and unpredictable, just like in Dark Souls, the game that inspired it.
Hellpoint features an interesting free-form progression system that improves your character and makes them stronger through constant practice and use of weapons, much like the system seen in Skyrim. On top of that, the developers promised a system of randomly generated events. The thing is, while the station spins around the black hole, all sorts of glitches and unexpected surprises can happen. For example, a portal might open and spawn new monsters. A boss might leave its lair and simply wander around the station, and at certain moments the whole atmosphere shifts, monsters grow stronger and more aggressive, and the hero picks up both positive and negative status effects.
The last nice touch is that the developers built the game with a focus on interaction with other players and encourage people to play through it in co-op. You can download Hellpoint for free and see how long you last on the station.
