In 2008 the renowned studio DICE released a one-of-a-kind action-adventure game called Mirror's Edge. It stood out for its original gameplay built around parkour. Less than a year after launch, the creators announced that work on a follow-up had begun, but players never got to see it. Over the years DICE searched for new ideas and tried to figure out which direction to take the project.
The thing is, the original did not sell as well as expected, so the successor needed a careful approach to fix that and draw in as wide an audience as possible. Years of effort produced not a sequel but a reboot, which is why it is called Mirror's Edge Catalyst. The game was officially announced in 2013, and in May 2015 it was confirmed that Mirror's Edge Catalyst would arrive in 2016.
What Is Mirror's Edge Catalyst About?
The action-adventure Mirror's Edge Catalyst depicts a comfortable city life in a utopian world with no room for crime or unrest. But there is no room for freedom or individuality either. Yes, this utopia has a catch: everything is controlled by the authorities, and every single person is under surveillance. You cannot send anyone a message without the authorities knowing what it says. Or can you?
It turns out some privacy still survives in this world. A team of couriers known as Runners was formed specifically to carry secret messages, and the heroine of Mirror's Edge Catalyst is one of them. Of course, you cannot just stroll down the monitored streets holding a secret message. Instead you have to get from point to point through quiet back alleys and along the walls and rooftops of high-rise buildings. That is where parkour skills come in handy!
The heroine has a very symbolic name, Faith. Her childhood memories are bound up with a deep hatred of the totalitarian regime that seized her hometown, which is why she joined the Runners. Her name stands for the belief of decent citizens that freedom from total control is still possible.
Gameplay Features of Mirror's Edge Catalyst
The game is being built on the Frostbite 3 engine, which gives good reason to expect that the visuals, animation, physics, sound and much more will be truly impressive. Although the gameplay of Mirror's Edge Catalyst is built on parkour rather than hand-to-hand fights, the combat system in the new game will be more developed. That approach broadens what you can do in the game and, with it, the range of players it appeals to. It is also worth noting that besides the single-player campaign, the game will feature several exciting multiplayer modes.
