A sequel to the famous Tomb Raider was announced at last year's E3 gaming conference, and that is when the developers began gradually sharing bits of information about the gameplay with fans. A few gameplay screenshots surfaced as well, though no video footage could be found online. It is worth noting that the creators of Rise of the Tomb Raider were specifically waiting for E3 2014, since it is an excellent stage for a game announcement. During the conference, a Microsoft employee tried out the gameplay. Of course, you could nitpick the gameplay endlessly, as it looks far too unrealistic, especially in the moments when Lara leaps across sheer cliffs. The game was set to launch first as an Xbox exclusive, with rumors that it would reach PC some time later.
Gameplay
The story of the new game sends the heroine to Siberia and a mysterious "oasis." She has to take on an enigmatic organization that calls itself Trinity. Besides human enemies, Lara also has to fight animals, bears included. Lara can hunt as she plays, but keep in mind that some animals only come out after dark, or, the other way around, only during the day. During snowstorms the animals naturally hide in their dens. A true hunter, Lara is an excellent underwater swimmer, heals herself with all kinds of herbs and roots, makes arrows and much more. Drizzle and fog cut visibility not only for the heroine but for her enemies too. To make equipment, Lara gathers a variety of resources, and on top of everything above she can use them to build traps, bows and much more, all the way up to Molotov cocktails. Combat is built around tactical maneuvers, such as distracting your enemies, and there are no stealth-action elements.
Compared with earlier entries, this one raises both the number and the difficulty of its puzzles. Noah Hughes, the project's creative director, says the team decided to give players lots of challenges and tasks that can be solved by interacting with various elements of the system. Puzzles won't be solved quickly, Hughes says, but by carrying out a certain combination of actions you can reach the solution. Among the many tasks, you will also come across mysterious inscriptions to decipher. Some of the puzzles are the same as in earlier games in the series. The developers have done a great job of blending the puzzles with a realistic environment. The world of Rise of the Tomb Raider is made up of locations several times larger than those in the previous game.
Story
The game takes place after the events told in the Tomb Raider comics, The Ten Thousand Immortals in particular. The comics describe how the heroine searches for a mysterious artifact that could heal Sam, who is dying from toxins. After her time on Yamatai, Lara decides to go looking for Kitezh, the so-called Russian Atlantis. Together with Jonah Maiava, Lara Croft travels across snowbound Siberia in search of the mythical city, where she hopes to find the secret of youth and eternal life.
This installment of Tomb Raider is an excellent adventure game in the survival-action genre. As before, Lara Croft will plunder other people's tombs, and this time she will also try to find the path to everlasting life. Players can look forward to polished episodes set in incredibly beautiful but equally dangerous corners of our planet. Fans got to see the new chapter of the legendary adventure series on November 10, with Rise of the Tomb Raider debuting first on the Xbox One.
