UMIGARI is a calm but unsettling first-person fishing game set in the misty waters off the coast of Japan. You head out to sea alone, armed with a harpoon and a small boat. At first everything feels routine: the catch, the fuel, the trip back to shore. But the farther you go from land, the stronger the feeling that the sea is watching you back.
A Sea That Stares Back
Hunting comes down to precision and patience. The harpoon punishes haste: fish move in different ways and react to noise and to your approach, and a miss costs you time and resources. Bit by bit you start running into creatures whose behavior breaks the usual logic, forcing you to pay closer attention to your surroundings and to your own actions.
The money from your catch goes into upgrading the boat and your gear. A bigger fuel tank opens up longer routes, new islands and strange finds out in the fog. The light horror here never jumps out at you directly. Instead it builds through silence, the distance from shore and the sense that the farther you sail, the fewer rules are left.
