Sweden's Frictional Games is once again out to surprise players with true horror. The studio already won fans over with the Penumbra series and Amnesia: The Dark Descent. You can download SOMA for free and see its latest work for yourself. The game takes place in PATHOS-II, an ocean research center. It's the cradle of robots with human feelings as well as superhuman abilities. One of them, for example, can easily predict the future in great detail, right down to the second. It's hard to call a creature like that a machine. And that's just one example, since every character at the facility reflects a theme of its own. But that's where the pleasant part of PATHOS-II ends. Everything else is shrouded in fear, tension and unprecedented malice. Experiments like these are tied tightly to deadly risk...
The developers gave SOMA many traits typical of the steampunk genre. The visuals turned out gloomy, yet striking and spectacular. To make sure the graphics would impress even seasoned players, the Frictional Games team built HPL Engine 3. The creators didn't cut corners on time and worked through every element. Work on SOMA began back in 2010. To keep fans up to date on their progress, trailers appeared online from time to time, drawing more and more attention to the new game. Those trailers made it clear that SOMA is built on an underwater setting, unusual characters, solid graphics and a steampunk atmosphere.
