The Surge Free Download

Gamescom, the biggest show around for gaming fans, put a whole lineup of projects on display this year, ranging from excellent to good to just okay. Among them was The Surge, a joint effort from Deck13 and Focus Home Interactive.

What the Game Offers

Genre. The Surge is a role-playing game with a hardcore action slant. The developers promise a new, improved crafting system, futuristic science and technology, solid gameplay and fast-paced combat. In the creators' own words, the mechanics borrow from From Software's work and the Souls series.

Story. The future, of course. Medieval settings are rare these days, and developers mostly reach for the near or distant future, whether in space, on other planets, or on Earth after some collapse or catastrophe. The Surge takes a slightly different angle: technological progress has advanced so far that human labor has become almost unnecessary. That has led to moral problems across society, and in the end people started moving out to suburban settlements. Even there, though, the push to make work easier did not stop, and people brought exoskeletons along to boost their productivity.

Your role. You play exactly one of those ordinary people who moved out to the suburbs. And don't worry, you get an exoskeleton too.

Crafting. This covers making new items, upgrades for your exoskeleton's modules and more. The exoskeleton helps you in fights against all sorts of enemies, and beating them earns you the resources you need for crafting and everything else. In other words, it is a constant cycle.

Combat. The combat system has been carefully worked out. Its pace deserves special mention, and the innovative fighting mechanics are just as hard to ignore. To make battles even more engaging, there is a unique character progression system, so you can settle on the fighting style that suits you best.
